King Family Donates Civil War Letter
On October 21, 2010, members of the King / Johnston / Havens family donated a Civil War-era letter to the Hudson History Room. Penned by John S. Johnston to his sweetheart Mattie, the letter details skirmishes involving Johnston's cavalry unit, Company I of the 3rd Illinois, around German Town, Tennessee in approximately 1863. "Mattie" is believed to refer to Martha Havens, who married John Johnston in 1865. As is appropriate with vintage documents, the original will be preserved in archival storage, while a copy will be framed for the research and perusal of Hudson History Room visitors. Many thanks to the King family for this wonderful donation!
